A recent surge in scam activity on the X platform has been attributed to the third-party automation service IFTTT (If This Then That).
Scammers utilized this service to flood the platform with deceptive posts, urging users to send Solana cryptocurrency to a specified wallet address in exchange for a meme token called “$PACKY.”
Notable figures in the crypto community, including a16z adviser Packy McCormick, COinbase product director Scott Shapiro, and Twitch co-founder Justin Kan, had their accounts compromised by these scammers.
McCormick swiftly alerted his followers, clarifying that his account was hacked and advising against clicking any links or sending funds to unknown addresses.
The fraudulent posts falsely claimed the creation of a new memecoin, “$PACKY,” with promises of extensive marketing strategies and listings on cryptocurrency exchanges, all while providing a Solana wallet address for transactions.
Soon after, McCormick pointed out, “Looks like the hacker got in through IFTTT (If This Then That), which I gave access to Twitter like a decade ago.” He assured that the issue had been resolved and urged other users to revoke access to connected apps.
